I've been frustrated this past week by poor service and poor government systems. Nothing new there. So I am going to distract you from work for a few minutes with some unrelated trivia.
Sing a licence
You know that screen that requires you to accept the software licence terms before you proceed? The one you don't read? Estimates are that 90% to 97% of people don't read it.
I came across a 2011 article about this on MeasuringU.com. The author gives two common-sense explanations for the lack of reading. First, EULAs (end-user licence ageements) are long and boring. Second, you don't have a choice. If you want to use the software, you have to click Accept
.
Somebody tried a new spin on the EULA. You can listen to an AI-generated performance of an EULA as a piano ballad on Suno.com. It's easy listening, but I still didn't pay attention to the words.
My musicality is as poor as my sense of direction. But it made mewonder why the funeral service had such poor taste in its music on hold when this is possible.
A different kind of hardware problem
Have you ever heard the term “hardware disease”? My first thought was that it is a strange term for a computer virus that targets the hardware.
Wrong! Hardware disease happens after an animal swallows a metal object. The object punctures the gastrointestinal tract and leads to infection. It sounds horrible. And it's a weird reminder that terminology can be misleading.
And finally, a health warning. According to a 2021 report, all that scrolling through social media can negatively impact eye movement.
As always, I'd love to hear your comments. Or share some trivia to distract me from my deadlines.
